AI-Generated Design Anti-Patterns and Detection

Paul Bakaus · Mar 5, 2026

AI slop design tells (design anti-patterns):

The obvious ones:

  • purple gradients / everything
  • over-used fonts like Inter

The not-so-obvious ones:

  • japanese-style UX writing (extreme redundancy)
  • cardocalypse (everything is a card, nested cards in cards)
  • massive rounded lucide icon above headings
  • thick colored border rounded cards
  • gray on top of colored bg, absolute black/white
  • lazy "cool" (glassmorphism, glow, neon/cyan-on-dark, monospace for hacker vibe)
  • lazy "impact" (gradients, sparklines, elastic animations)
  • layout templates (i.e. hero metric layout = big number, small label, supporting stats, gradient accent)
  • junior designer rush jobs ("let's just hide this in a modal")
